The Story of Chanukah More than two thousand years ago, in the year 165 B.C.E., the Jewish people were ruled by the cruel Syrian king, Antiochus. He drove the Jewish people out of the Temple in Jerusalem and ordered them to worship idols. Those who refused his decree were killed. The Jews, led by Mattathias and his five sons, fought the Syrians and won back the Temple. They found it filled with altars and idols. After working hard to repair it, they discovered only enough oil for one day. When the oil burned for eight days, it was considered a miracle. We remember this miracle each year by lighting the Chanukah menorah.
